Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was very good this week on the grass flats near both passes this week. Bass Assassin Sea Shad baits tore them up, catching pompano, Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, and good numbers of bluefish and ladyfish. Several of my clients had never used artificial baits previously, one had never even fished! But, all did well casting these baits. Red/gold shiner was the most productive color. Middlegrounds, Country Club Shores, and Marina Jacks were all good spots this week.

Sarasota residents John Englander, Doc Dojutrek, and Bill Kish had a very good charter on Monday. We ran the beach first thing in search of bonita, but not much happening. We can back inside and the action was steady for 4 hours. The Middlegrounds was good, but the wind cranked up so I was headed south when I saw some breaking fish in pretty shallow. We did well on bluefish to 3 pounds, trout, and ladyfish. We finished up at Marina jacks with steady action before heading in.
Conditions were a bit tough on Wednesday for Nick Torelli from Chicago, IL, his wife Anne, his brother Louis, and sister-in-law Lee. It was quite breezy and we did well for the first half of the trip at Marker #5. Lee had never fished before but learned quickly and did well, catching the largest bluefish. As the tide came in, it brought dirty water from the stirred-up Gulf, slowing the bite a bit. We finished up at Country Club Shores, experiencing sporadic action until it was time to go home.

I finished up the week with another good charter with Terry Harkey and her boyfriend Israel, from Charlotte, NC. It started off a bit slow as the tide was slack, but by mid-morning we had found a bunch of fish feeding heavily at Country Club Shores. The couple landed pompano, Spanish mackerel, and ladyfish on jigs.
