Capt Jim Klopfer's weekly Sarasota Fishing Report

Capt. Jim Klopfer
June 23, 2012
Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Experience in being out on the water on a daily basis along with the ability to read local weather conditions really paid off this week. The forecast from Wednesday through Saturday was poor, yet I got in each trip with only a few sprinkles, and for the most part we were successful. Never cancel a trip based on the forecast! Fishing grass flats in 5'-8' of water near the passes continues to be the most productive pattern on my charters. Speckled trout, silver trout, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, jacks, snapper, flounder, and ladyfish hit jigs, Gulp! Shrimp, live shrimp, and baitfish this week.

Peter Ianace and his twin 7 year old boys Landon and Anthony from Frisco, TX caught Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, ladyfish, sea bass, and jack crevelle on live shrimp and pilchards near Big Pass on Monday morning. A fairly stiff east breeze made things tough on the boys, and they missed some bites. But, they caught plenty of fish and had a good time.

It was a perfect fishing day on Tuesday. Overcast, light breeze out of the east, and a strong incoming tide. Ron Shaney and his children Ronnie and Valerie caught Speckled trout to 22', Spanish mackerel and bluefish to two pounds, jack crevelle, snapper, and ladyfish at the Marina Jack and Bird Key flats using live shrimp and Gulp! baits. Action was very steady, we caught fish at every spot.

We were greeting with breezy conditions on Wednesday, but still had a productive trip. Sarasota resident Trevor Jessup, his girlfriend Ashlee Griffith, and his mom Suzanne Gordon caught a 15', 17', and 18' speckled trout at the Marina Jack and Bird Key flats, along with smaller trout, silver trout, jacks, and ladyfish using live shrimp. We finished up on a mangrove shoreline in Roberts Bay where Trevor caught a small snook.

David Morgan wanted to try and catch a tarpon on Thursday morning, so we headed out to Point of Rocks at first light. We were surprised to find a large swell in the inshore Gulf of Mexico and very few fish. In fact, we never made a cast. By all accounts it has been a poor tarpon season. We came back inside after a while and bay fished. David caught a small trout on a green Clouser, pretty tough day.

Local Sarasota resident Doc Dojutrek caught speckled trout, silver trout, spanish mackerel, sea bass, mangrove snapper, jacks, and ladyfish using Gulp! Shrimp at the Radio Tower, Bird Key, and Marina Jack flats on Friday.

Another local resident, Charles Mancino, went out on Saturday, along with his buddy Bob. The weather was looking marginal, but decided to go and it really paid off; we had an excellent morning! The boys wanted some fish for dinner, the final tally was 4 slot trout from 16"-18", 4 mangrove snapper and three silver trout to 13". The big trout were caught on live shrimp and the snapper and silver trout on pilchards. We also caught plenty of short trout, jacks, sea bass, a ladyfish, and a small mackerel. We got in at 11:00, just ahead of the weather. Great way to end another good week of fishing in Sarasota!
