Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

The week started off with the excellent fishing continuing. Jim and Marie Broberg and their daughters Kristin (20) and Heather (18) caught a dozen sheepshead under docks, keeping 8 for dinner. As the tide turned to come in, gold D.O.A. jigs and live shrimp fooled a bunch of ladyfish. The nearby deep grass flats produced ten Spanish mackerel to 3 lbs on free lined shrimp. We finished up the morning catching a 3 lb jack and a small snook under a Siesta Key dock.
Monday's charter was quite similar. Craig Raiford and his boys Luke and Eli caught 13 different species including redfish, speckled and silver trout, Spanish mackerel to 3 lbs, flounder, sheepshead, ladyfish, and gag grouper. Jigs and shrimp free lined in Big Pass and the docks and flats near Bird Key produced most of the fish. The afternoon was a bit slower, but still resulted in macks, sheepshead, trout, and ladyfish.
Bill LaPierre from MA went out on Tuesday morning. After catching some sheepies and ladyfish in Big Pass, we decided to do something different and go out on the beach. It really wasn't going on, but we caught a nice Spanish mackerel, silver trout, and ladyfish on Rapala X-raps and jigs near Point of Rocks. In the afternoon Steve Cook and his son Andrew from Ontario experienced great action on trout, mackerel, and ladyfish in Big Pass and the surrounding flats using live pilchards and shrimp. They also caught a pompano on fly. We finished up with several sheepshead under Siesta Key docks.
Jeanne and Rich Tobias from Ft. Wayne, IN treated their daughter Morgan and her fiance Josh to a charter on Wednesday. Once again, the sheepshead bite was very good. Once we had a few for the box, the nearby grass flats produced Spanish mackerel, trout, and ladyfish.
John Lorentz from St. Paul, MN and his twin 9 year old boys Nick and Mitch had a terrific morning! They wanted a few fish for dinner and the sheepshead were running large under the docks on Bird Key. After they had enough for a meal, we went for action on the deep flats nearby. Plenty of trout to 20", ladyfish, several Spanish mackerel, a couple of bluefish, and a flounder kept the boys busy. Live pilchards and shrimp caught all the fish. We finished up working a dock on Siesta Key, where Mitch completed an inshore slam, landing a 20" redfish and a 22" snook to go along with his trout.
Repeat client Peg Heaslip from Osprey took out her niece and nephew Alanna and Cole Dowling who were in town visiting from Vancouver. The sheepshead bite was a little slower, but they caught eight keepers to 3 pounds and finished up with mackerel and trout on the flats.
