Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Strong morning rising tides made for good fishing in the bay this week for speckled trout and Spanish mackerel. Sheepshead are still plentiful near both passes. The inshore Gulf of Mexico is good for mackerel. Snook are being caught along Siesta Key along with the occasional redfish.
Dave Buckley from Gettysburg, PA fished with me on Sunday and Wednesday mornings. Dave enjoys fishing the inshore Gulf, so after catching bait and landing a few trout, mackerel, and ladyfish we went out and worked the inshore reefs. Spanish mackerel to 3 pounds and flounder to 18" were the top catches.
Fly fisherman Jack Martin from the Philadelphia, PA area caught a dozen trout to 17" and several ladyfish on white D.T. specials on Manday morning on the flats near Big Pass.
Suzy and Dick Wahba and their children Charlie and Victoria from New York City caught nearly 50 fish including Spanish mackerel to 2 pounds, trout to 17", ladyfish, 3 keeper sheepshead, gag grouper, jack crevelle, croaker, and other species near Big Pass using live shrimp.
Jessica and Dustin White from Elmwood Park, IL had a great morning on Thursday. Slot trout were released and 4 Spanish mackerel went in the box for lunch. The fish hit live shrimp and pilchards near Big Pass. We finished up working a dock along Siesta Key where Dustin caught several snook, and Jessica completed her "Inshore Slam", landing a nice red and 2 snook.
Scott Domowicz from Erie, PA took his two boys Eric (10) and Colin (12) out on thier first saltwater fishing trip. The boys did a great job, catching plenty of trout, ladyfish, a several Spanish mackerel. Colin ended the morning with a nice 4 lb mack!
Saturday morning Betty Gravlich and Trey Johnson from Sarasota went out with me. We did not catch a lot of fish, but the ones we did catch were quality fish. Four trout between 16" and 18", a pair of 2 pound mackerel, and six snook to 24" were caught using live pilchards on the north end of Siesta Key
