Excellent Speckled trout action in Sarasota!

Capt. Jim Klopfer

Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Slack tides and rising water temperatures hampered fishing and bait-catching a bit early in the week, but we did catch speckled trout to 24", Spanish mackerel to 3 lbs, jack crevelle to 3 lbs, bluefish to 3 1/2 lbs, ladyfish, flounder and sharks. On Monday I took out David and his sons Nolan and Carter. We caught slot trout and mackerel at the Bird Key flats, finishing up with a 20" and 24" trout at the middlegrounds..

On Tuesday I was one of the guides that was included in the Wounded Warrior fishing trip sponsored by Operation Second Chance. We caught blues, trout, and mackerel at the middlegrounds and radio tower on live pilchards.

Michele and Randy Bray from Ft. Worth, TX fished with me on Wednesday. We caught a fair amount of fish, but most of them were small. On Thursday Dave Winkler, a Sarasota resident who purchased my donated CCA trip fished with me. Speckled trout to 18", ladyfish, and flounder hit Rapala plugs, gold and rootbeer/gold Cotee jigs, and Trigger-X soft plastic baits at the Moorings, Shoal, and Stephen's Pt.

The action was steady on Friday. I had 3 fellows from the UK who had never fished in Sarasota before. They wanted a few for the grill and we ended up with 4 Spanish to 2 1/2 lbs and 4 slot trout along with ladyfish and jack crevelle at the Bird Key and Marker #5 flats. We also hooked a half dozen sharks up to 5 feet long. Not much you can do with those big guys on 10 lb spinning gear, but it was a lot of fun!

On Sunday Anne and Ed Jensen from Frankfort, IL took their son Calvin out on his first saltwater trip. The result was a bunch of trout with a half dozen slot trout to 19" and 2 nice bluefish near Big Pass, then finished the morning with a 22" snook. All of the fish were caught on live pilchards and shrimp..
