Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Perkins, newlyweds from Brownsburg, IN went out fishing with me early in the week. Speckled trout, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, jacks and ladyfish were caught on live shrimp at Marker # 5 and the Bird Key flats.
Marcus Fricke and Russ VanMaanen from Iowa took out their 11 year old boys. They did well on a variety of species, landing large silver trout, speckled trout to 18", bluefish, ladyfish, sea bass, jack crevelle, and mackerel at Marker #5 and in the Yacht Club Channel. Free lined live shrimp and gold Cotee jigs were equally effective.
The trout bite was fantastic Friday morning at the Selby and Marna Jack flats. Todd Hopkins, Tom Simokaitis, and the Gallahers, all from St Louis, MO caught a bunch of trout including 15 or so in the slot, along with a couple of big bluefish and mackerel, and a bunch of ladyfish. Cotee jigs and shrimp under a popping cork were used that morning.
Sarasota resident Doc Dojutrek took a couple of buddies visiting out on a trip Saturday morning. They are experienced anglers and enjoy casting artificial lures. Gold and rootbeer/gold Cotee jigs, Rapala X-Raps, and Gulp! Shrimp fooled speckled trout to 20", large bluefish, ladyfish, and a nice Spanish mackerel. The best spots were the Moorings and Buttonwood flats. We finished up the morning with a 25" redfish in the Longboat Key canal on an olive X-Rap.
