Fast action in Sarasota with Capt Jim Klopfer

Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was outstanding this week! Warming water and longer days really had the fish chewing. Snook, redfish, speckled trout, silver trout, pompano, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, sheepshead, mangrove snapper, black sea bass, gag grouper, flounder, and loads of ladyfish were caught on charters this week in the Big Pass area. D.O.A jigs, Rapala X-Raps and live shrimp were all productive.

We had a good morning fishing the passes and inshore Gulf of Mexico on Monday. Ray Moreland from Chicago, IL treated his father-in-law Dick to a fishing trip. Spanish mackerel and ladyfish hit gold D.O.A Cal jigs in New Pass, then we moved out to the Silvertooth Reef. Flounder to 18", sheepshead to 2 lbs, Spanish mackerel to 2 lbs, a small king, grunts, and other bottom fish hit shrimp and cut bait. We then ran to Point of Rocks in search of surface activity. None was seen, but we caught several nice bluefish, silver trout, and a mackerel on jigs drifting with the breeze.

I had a great fly fishing charter on Tuesday. Part-time Sarasota resident David Morgan and his friend Jeff caught pompano, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, speckled trout, and ladyfish on chartreuse/white Clousers and white D.T. Specials in Big Pass, New Pass, and at the Moorings.

Wednesday Peggy Heaslip from Osprey, FL took her friends Joan and Bob Banville from Beaver Island, MI and local resident Frank Lovell out fishing. Pompano, bluefish, ladyfish, and Spanish mackerel were caught in Big Pass on jigs and shrimp. Docks in the area gave up sheepshead, flounder, and black sea bass. Fishing deep flat edges resulted in speckled trout, silver trout, and ladyfish. Most of the fish were caught on live shrimp.

Bill LaPierre from Massachussetts had a fabulous morning on Thursday free lining live shrimp. We began with non-stop action in Big Pass on ladyfish. A move to the Yacht Club Channel resulted in a half dozen nice Spanish mackerel to 3 pounds. We finished up working docks in Robert's Bay where Bill caught several snook and reds, completing his "Inshore Slam". He topped it off with a 15" mangrove snapper.

Bill Thiel from Naperville, IL caught several slot trout along with a 21" fish on the bars near Midnight Pass on live shrimp.

JoAnne Johnson and Andy Archer from MN experienced virtually non-stop action all morning long on Friday. Ladyfish hit gold D.O.A. Cal shd tail jigs in Big Pass and a VERY large Spanish mackerel hit a Rapala X-Rap. Speckled trout, mackerel, and ladyfish hit jigs and shrimp on the deep edges in the Yacht Club Channel. Sheepshead and mangrove snapper were caught under docks along the north end of Siesta Key. We finished up with a half dozen slot trout to 20" on live shrimp at the Marina Jack flat.
