Fishing improves in Sarasota after tropical weather

Capt. Jim Klopfer

Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sarasota received a bunch of rain early in the week, up to 15" in some areas, along with the Gulf of Mexico being churned up and dirty from the wind! That pretty much shut down fishing early in the week. I was able to get out at the end of the week, finding the water near the passes pretty dirty. The further north I went the better it got, with the best action being between Country Club Shores and Long Bar. I had Dan Phillips, a high school senior from SW Pennsylvania and a VERY good angler, for two days. Dan used a variety of techniques including casting Rapala plugs and Bass Assassin jigs, using live bait fish, and even caught quite a few fly fishing using Clouser Minnow patterns. Despite the dirty water, bait was still easy to catch. Speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, jack crevelle, mangrove snapper, gag grouper, ladyfish, sharks, and other species using all of these techniques. Early in the morning on the second day, Dan hooked a sixty pound tarpon on a jig and got one blistering run and a big jump out of it before parting the leader!
