Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report
Wind was an issue this week, making fishing a bit more challenging. It does not affect the bite, but the boat drifting fast, slack in the line, and the water getting some color does reduce the percentage of fish that are caught. The Middlegrounds, Country Club Shores, and Robert's Bay held quite a few ladyfish with some speckled trout mixed in. Docks in and near Big Pass are loaded with sheepshead as the spawning run is in full swing. Some decent snapper are mixed in as well; live shrimp fished on the bottom worked best. I ran two charters this week in the Myakka River, probably my last of the spring as the water is getting quite warm. Clients landed snook and bass casting Rapala X-Raps and flies.
I was in the Myakka River on Monday and Wednesday. Rich Pasquarella and a buddy fished on Monday, catching a decent bass a couple of small snook. Bob Berry from Oklahoma caught his first snook ever, and on fly at that! The bite was fair both days, the water is getting a bit too warm.
Jim Rokicki and his 22 year old daughter Kayla fished fish me on Tuesday. The action was fast along the west side of the bay at the south end of Longboat Key. Kayla had never used spinning tackle before, but caught on quickly. Red/gold shiner Bass Assassin jigs caught the fish; mostly ladies with a few trout mixed in. We finished up in Robert's Bay with a few more before we headed in.
It was quite breezy on Thursday for Bill Marean from upstate New Your and his friends C.R. and Joe. We started off at Stephen's Pt., but onlt caught a few trout and ladyfish. A move to the Middlegrounds resulted in steady action on trout and ladyfish casting jigs. We pulled the plug a little early as the bay was solid white caps.
It was breezy once again on Friday, but the fishing was very good for Gearge Thorne and his wife Susan from N.C. and their friends Debbie and Bennett. We started off working a dock in Big Pass and found the action to be fast and furious. They put a bunch of sheepshead in the boat, as well as several nive mangrove snapper and a few gag grouper. The wind eventually became too much and we moved to Robert's Bay where shrimp and Bass Assassin jigs accounted for trout, jacks, ladyfish, and a sailcat.
