Fishing in Sarasota rebounded after Hermine

Capt. Jim Klopfer

Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing rebounded quickly after the passing of Tropical Storm Hermine. The water did have a "tannin" look to it, kind of like iced tea, but it was not muddy and the water temperature dropped a few degrees. Bait was relatively plentiful and fairly easy to catch. I started off several trips using Glow Bass Assassin Sea Shad baits at the Middlegrounds as there was a bit of surface activity, then switching to live baitfish after an hour or so. Grass flats in shallow water produced early then the deeper flats were better later in the morning. The Middegrounds, Radio Tower, Marina Jacks, and Bird Key flats were all productive on fishing charters this week.

I started off my week on Monday, not really knowing what to expect after 5 days off due to Hurricane Hermine. I had Georgia Gamelin on board, her husband Tony, brother Shawn, son Bryce (13), and niece Jaclyn (15). The charter was a birthday present for Bryce, so the trip was about him and Jaclyn. We cast lures for the first hour, catching trout, ladyfish, and grouper on Glow Bass Assassin jigs, then I went to catch bait. It was easier than expected in the stained water and I went back to the Middlegrounds and anchored up where I had seen some fish working. For the next hour and a half it was pretty hot, with the gang catching trout to 19", Spanish mackerel, mangrove snapper, gag grouper, jacks, flounder, and ladyfish. We finished up near Marina Jacks then headed in.

Paul Myers from Fr. Wayne, IN and his sons Elijah (12) and David (10) joined me for a fishing charter on Tuesday. Once again, we began by casting Bass Assassin jigs over the grass and into bait schools near New Pass, catching trout, ladyfish, and grouper. After an hour or so, I caught bait and the bite was very steady at the Middlegrounds and near Bird Key. Trout to 18", Spanish mackerel to 2 pounds, bluefish to 2 pounds, gag grouper, mangrove snapper, sea bass, and jacks kept the rods bent and the boys smiling!

Ashley and Davis Didanato from Ft. Hood, Kansas were my guests as well. Their goal was to beat their personal best of 17 fish on a trip. There are never guarantees in fishing, but I was pretty confident that they could top that, and they did, landing over 60 fish! Speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, jack crevelle, mangrove snapper, gag grouper, ladyfish, a big ray, and a small shark provided steady action on the deep flats near both passes using live baitfish.

I finished up my week with Terry and Tom Steele from Lancaster, PA. Terry caught a handful of fish but mostly watched and took pictures as Tom did quite well on trout, mackerel, jacks, grouper, and ladyfish. The Radio Tower and Marina Jacks were the top spots.
