Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report
Conditions were less than ideal early in the week as a wicked front was approaching. Michele and Randy Bowers and their two children from Grand Haven, Mi. did quite well on Monday morning in a 20 knot south wind. We caught a bunch of Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, and ladyfish in Big Pass and at the Bird Key flats on live pilchards.
Tuesday was a wash due to storms and high winds. Wednesday morning greeted us with classic post-cold front conditions;, NE winds and high pressure. Bob Stack from Sarasota and his friend Felicity did not catch a lot of fish, but we did land some quality trout and mackerel, free-lining pilchards behind Bird Key. Nate Arnold and his 2 sons from Ohio did about the same in the afternoon.
On Thursday, 8 year old Ruby Bruce and her dad Todd from Minnesota had a nice morning, catching speckled trout to 21", Spanish mackerel to 3 pounds, large ladyfish and sheepshead fishing in Big Pass, the radio tower flat, and Bird Key on shrimp and Cotee jigs. Thursday afternoon Bob Stearns and his son in law Jeff did well on mackerel in Big Pass and speckled trout to 23" at the Mooorings on shrimp.
The action Friday morning was virtually non-stop. Paul Carr and hid buddy Ken Haas from Massachusetts caught Spanish mackerel to 3 1/2 pounds, big ladyfish, and a bonnethead shark in Big Pass on gold Cotee jigs and live shrimp. A large cuda cut a mack and ladyfish in half at the boat, causing much excitement! Several tosses of my 10' net resulted in a livewell full of pilchards. The next 2 hours was spend catching large bluefish, jack crevelle to 5 pounds, mackerel to 4 pounds, speckled trout to 22", ladyfish and sailcats on nearly every cast on the Bird Key flats. It was a fantastic morning!
