Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Recent daily afternoon rain showers have resulted in a water temperature drop of nearly ten degree, and the fish REALLY like it! Action has been virtually non-stop using pilchards on the flats at the north end of Siesta Key and Bird Key.
On Sunday I took out the Connell boys, Jim and his son Jim, from Lakeland, FL. They caught a bunch of trout to 20" on glow Gulp! Shrimp under a noisy cork at the Marina Jack flats and behind Bird Key. On Monday morning Roberty Ulc took out his 10 year old son Ryan. Fishing pilchards and shrimp on deep grass edges in the Yacht Club Channel and at Marker #5 resulted in plenty of trout and ladyfish, along with several Spanish mackerel and bluefish.
Tuesday morning found the Primavera family from West Long Branch, NJ out on my boat. Ralph had his 2 sons, Ralph (15) and Chris (14) out for the morning. Fishing was very steady on trout with mackerel, blues, jacks, and ladyfish. Chris finished up the morning with a blacktip shark at marker # 5 that bit through the leader at the boat.
Thursday morning Adam Gilbert from Bartlesville, OK took out his 7 year old son Hank. Young Hank did a fine job, catching a fish on nearly every cast first thing at the Bird Key flats on pilchards. Adam is a professional chef and wanted a couple of fish to cook for dinner. They ended up keeping a couple of Spanish mackerel at Bird Key, then a 16" trout and a nice mangrove snapper on the north side of Siesta Key. On the way in Hank caught 2 redfish in Phillippi Creek, great way to end the morning!
Christian Merrill from Knoxville, TN took out his son and a friend on Friday morning. We kept a sharp eye on the weather and had to cut the trip short by a half hour or so, but they caught a bunch of fish, topped off by a Spanish mackerel at Marker # 5 that was pushing 5 lbs. Nice fish! Saturday was a rain-out.
