Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing has been outstanding this week with the great weather and coming off of the full moon. I have been running charters every day, doing a lot of my fishing off of the north end of Siesta Key and around Bird Key. Docks and other structure in deep water have been holding large sheepshead and gag grouper. Michele Holzapfel from Toronto caught a 22" gag under one dock! Live and frozen shrimp fished on the bottom has been the most productive technique.
Early in the week I took out Peg Heaslip from Osprey, Fl and her son. We caught a bunch of big ladyfish near the Siesta Drive bridge, then went out to the rocks at the western tip of Siesta Key and caught a nice mess of sheepshead to 5 pounds.
Friday morning I took out Jim Mitchell from Longboat Key and his brother John who was in town for a visit. We caught a couple of nice sheepies off of the Bird Key docks then worked some flats nearby. Pompano to 3 pounds, Spanish mackerel to 3 pounds, and plenty of speckled trout hit free lined live shrimp. That afternoon, I took out Scott Watson from Fairfield, Ct and his sons Matthew and Patrick. The boys did quite well, catching mackerel and speckled trout on gold Cotee jigs and live shrimp at the middlegrounds and the Moorings.
