Sarasota Fishing was excellent over the July 4th Holiday!

Capt. Jim Klopfer

Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

The strategy this week has been to get out there EARLY, find grass in 6'-8' with clean water and toss jigs and live bait. Rising water temperatures seem to have the fish a tad deeper this week. The water near the passes is still a bit murky, but is clearing up daily. Species list for this week's charters include speckled trout, redfish, jack crevelle, bluefish, flounder, mangrove snapper, black sea bass, and ladyfish.

On Sunday morning Ralph Primavera and his 15 year old son Chris caught speckled trout, sea bass, and ladyfish at the Moorings on Gulp! Shrimp and pilchards. Action was steady, but the bite got a little tough later in the morning. Even though it was the day of the boat races, traffic was not bad. It did get very hot with not much breeze.

Jason Olges and his 15 year old son Tristan from Dillsboro, IN got onto a good trout bite early Monday morning. They caught a couple dozen, putting three in the box, along with several ladyfish. They wanted to change it up, so we caught some bait and hit a few docks and shorelines in Robert's Bay. The result was a half dozen mangs and a slot redfish.

Kevin Quinn from Tampa and his buddy Chris Pierce and Chris's 18 year old daughter Hadley had a good morning of speckled trout fishing along the west side of Sarasota Bay using Gulp! Shrimp and live bait on Tuesday. They also landed a nice bluefish, ladyfish, jack, and flounder.

Long-time client Marcel Hamburger from Houston, TX and his daughter Morgan and son Grant went out on Wednesday, July 4th. We went at 6:15 to beat both the heat and the holiday boat traffic. Using Gulp! Shrimp and live baitfish, they landed 75 fish, a lot of speckled trout with a half dozen in the slot. The Moorings, Bishops Pt, and middlegrounds all produced equally well. Other species caught were a nice mangrove snapper, a big black sea bass, several small flounder, a couple of ladyfish, and a decent mackerel that ate through the leader boatside.

We started very early on Thursday, before 6:00 a.m. as Scott Pearce and his 14 year old son Mitchell had to be on the road by 9:30 at the latest. Once again, the deep flats on the west side gave up plenty of speckled trout to 18" on jigs. Scott also landed a nice bluefish. We finished up at the middlegrounds with sea bass, trout, jacks, and ladyfish.

Greg Bass from Lordstown, OH treated his 10 year old son Christopher to his first fishing experience on a boat on Friday. Young Christopher did very well using a D.O.A. deadly combo on the flats near Bishop's Pt. For whatever reason, we did better in shallower water today, between 4'-5'. Greg caught most of his fish on a glow Gulp! Shrimp. close to 50 trout were landed, with several in the slot to 17', a Spanish mackerel, flounder, jack crevelle, and ladyfish. After fishing straight through the holiday, I am taking the weekend off!
