Sarasota Fishing rebounds after Debby, by Capt Jim Klopfer

Capt. Jim Klopfer
June 30, 2012
Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Inshore fishing rebounded quickly after Debby passed through. We did not sustain any real permanent damage, just an infusion of fresh water from the rainfall. The areas near the passes remained cloudy from the churned up Gulf of Mexico. But, we found a nice patch of clean water on the west side of the bay from Country Club Shores north to Buttonwood Harbor. Trout fishing was very good with mackerel, jacks, bluefish, flounder, sea bass, and ladyfish mixed in. This time of year the shrimp get scarce and small, so a switch to jigs, Gulp! Shrimp, and live baitfish is in order. Excellent fishing near the passes should resume after the 4th of July.

It was Thursday before the weather would let me back out on the water. Janine and Steve Weiss from Morristown, NJ and their 12 year old son Ean had to work to find the fish. Most of the bay was filled with rain water or muddy water from the Gulf. We did find a nice patch near Bishop's Pt and caught 3 trout in the slot, a dozen shorts, and a nice black sea bass on Gulp! Shrimp and live pinfish and grunts.

On Friday I fished a two boat charter with Capt Terry Simmons out of CB's. We took out the Murphy family from Atkinson, NH, I had Sean (18), Mike (16), and Brendan (14). My normal spots near the passes were still a bit dirty, so we met at Ken Thompson Park and headed up north to an area that had nice water. We did quite well, the boys caught a bunch of trout including a pair of 18" and several more in the slot, a Spanish mackerel, bluefish, jack crevelle, and flounder. We finished up with a ladyfish flurry on the deep edge of a flat. All of the fish were caught using Gulp! Shrimp.

Lauri Bates and her husband Phillip from Auburn, AL fished with me on Saturday morning. Action was steady off of Longboat Key, but a lot of the fish were small. Still, they managed enough trout for a meal and had a lot of fun.
