Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sarasota fishing report Jan 4 2011
Anglers fishing aboard Sarasota Fishing Charters caught a wide variety of species this past week including Trout , Redfish, Black drum, Sheep head, Flounder, Jack crevalle, Snapper and Ladyfish.
After a few cold days the weather warmed to its usual Sarasota Standards and the fishing was pretty good
We have been fishing canals, channel edges and docks as that is the winter pattern here. The best baits have been shrimp fished right on the bottom and CAL jigs with a GULP tail fished very, very slowly.
Christmas eve, I was joined by Jay Alexander from Chicago and his sons Seth and Morgan. They caught over 30 Juvenile Redfish, 20 or so Trout to 18" Flounder to 18" and Ladyfish. It was one of those trips where everything fell into place .. weather.. fishing and a great time.
After a great Christmas, it was back on the water again. Tom Stefano and his Dad Antonio joined me for a 6 hour trip. The reds were still in the same spots and they caught 18 to 26" Although most were in the 20 "range. They also caught trout, flounder, sheep head and black drum.
A cold front blew in on Sunday evening making fishing impossible for Monday and Tuesday as it was very cold and extremely windy. On Wednesday, I had a short sightseeing/ Eco tour with the Gradeny Family from New Hampshire that was lots of fun and probably the best thing to do as it was still windy and cool.
Thursday morning was cool, but sunny that turned into a nice warm day. Rob Erhart and sons Will and Kane joined me for a great morning of fishing. Let me tell you that these 2 kids are quite the fishermen for being so young (6 ½ & 5) > they were patient, listened and really had a blast catching all kinds of fish. They caught Trout to 22" Black drum to 7 lbs Sheep head to 3 lbs and others. Friday I had a trio from Wisconsin. Eric, Nick and Lou. They had a tougher time because of horribly windy
Conditions, but still managed trout, flounder, sheep head and black drum.
Saturday morning, Kevin Watkins form Maine fly fished on a very windy day. He was a good sport and had pretty good fly-fishing skills. He managed 8 trout, a pompano and several small ladyfish. Finally, David Cary fish Sunday morning on a perfect day with light winds and warm weather. He caught many, many beautiful trout, some flounder and sheep head. I truly have no idea how many tout he caught, but for a long time it seemed as though he had one or caught one on every cast.

Sarasota Fishing Forecast:

Winter time fishing will continue until mid Feb. with the fish located in deeper channels , boat basins and docks. Look for Pompano, Bluefish and maybe mackeral to show up in mid to late Feb.

More Fishing Reports:

Sarasota bay fishing at its finest. Light tackle excursions for Tarpon Snook Redfish and other Florida gamefish. Novices and Families welcome. Highest quality fishing for a fair price.
