Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sarasota Bay is full of bait and even though the recent rains have stained the water, they also have resulted in a drop in water temperature. Breaking fish are working near Bird Key, the Radio Tower, and in both passes. The deep flats near the passes are providing good action on speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, ladyfish, snapper, and sharks. Tarpon are around the area bridges, but tough to hook and land. Mangrove snapper and redfish are still around the docks on the north end of Siesta Key, an outgoing tide is best.
Sunday morning Lisa and Tom Daegling from St. Louis, MO had a very good fishing charter. As I neared my bait spot in Big Pass, we were interrupted by a large school of breaking fish, which turned out to be ladyfish. We caught a dozen or so on Rapala X-Raps and live shrimp, then moved on. Two throws of the net filled the well, and anchoring and chumming in the Yacht Club Channel resulted in a bunch of speckled trout to 18", a couple of Spanish mackerel to 2 pounds, a keeper mangrove snapper, and several more ladyfish. We tried Marker # 5 and the birds were a nuisance, but Lisa did catch a 3 foot Bonnethead shark along with several trout. Pitching live baits under docks on the north side of Siesta resulted in more snapper to 12" and a small redfish. On the last spot of the morning, the mouth of Phillippi Creek, Lisa completed her "slam" catching a snook on a live shrimp.
