Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was excellent this week as we came off the full moon. Speckled trout are plentiful on the deep flats, although many are just under the slot, along with some decent Spanish mackerel, snapper, and ladyfish. The big news is that the inshore Gulf of Mexico off off Siesta Key is on fire. Breaking fish are everywhere! Spanish mackerel, tons of ladyfish, a few false albacore, and sharks are tearing up the bait off of Point of Rocks and Siesta Beach.
Early in the week Cissy and Don Neill from Plano, TX fished with me. We started out at first light hitting the mouth of Phillippi Cr on the bottom of the outgoing tide. Cissy caught a 5 pound jack and Don caught a snapper on Rapala X-Raps. We then moved to the flats near Big Pass and caught a couple of nice Spanish mackerel along with 40 or so speckled trout, a keeper snapper, and two 10 pound sharks on shrimp and pilchards.
Later in the week, long time client Dave Buckley and his dad Bob from Gettysburg, PA had a great morning with me. We started out netting up bait near the Twin Bridges and chumming up big mackerel, trout, ladyfish, snapper, and grouper near Otter Key. We then went out Big Pass and into the Gulf and experienced terrific action on breaking fish near Point of Rocks. I have never seen so many ladyfish and Spanish mackerel busting on top. We caught all we wanted on Rapalas and pilchards, including hooking 6 sharks but only landing one, what a great morning!
