Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing has settled into a reliable winter pattern. Low morning tides will have fish cruising the outside edges of deep flats. Afternoon high tides are best for fishing over the flats for speckled trout, pompano, ladyfish, and bluefish. Snook, reds, and jacks are in the backs of canals. Sheepshead are showing up on bars south of Siesta Drive and under the Bird Key docks.
Tim Wilhelm from Ann Arbor, MI took out his young son Zack and nephew Leo out on Monday afternoon. Action was steady on speckled trout and ladyfish on the flats near Vamo using live shrimp and D.O.A. jigs. A move to Phillippi Creek resulted in ten sheepshead and a couple of flounder.
David Morgan of Chevy Chase, MD and his 20 year old son fished with me on Wednesday morning. Fishing was a little tough, but we managed trout, ladyfish, and flounder on jigs and live shrimp near Bird Key. The fish bit much better on Thursday for local Sarasota residents Doc Dojutrek and Al Dauer. Speckled trout to 19", redfish, flounder, a nice Spanish mackerel, and ladyfish were caught along deep grass edges near Big Pass on Gulp! Shrimp and live shrimp. We finished up with several sheepshead in Roberts Bay.
Jeane and Tom Berry from Rapid City, SD treated a couple of friends to a trip on Saturday morning. We caught 30 fish or so, including speckled trout, ladyfish, flounder, sheepshead, and gag grouper. The Trout, flounder, and ladyfish hit jigs and shrimp at the Bird Key, Radio Tower, and Moorings flats, the grouper and sheepies were caught under docks along Bird Key.
