Sarasota Fishing Report Capt Jim Klopfer 2/26/2012

Capt. Jim Klopfer
February 26, 2012
Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was good this week on a variety of species. Speckled trout led the way; slot trout were landed from Bishop's Pt. south to Blackburn Pt. on D.O.A Cal jigs, Gulp! Shrimp, Trigger-X baits, and live shrimp. Large ladyfish, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, and jacks were caught along with the specks. Sheepshead fishing slowed a bit.

On Monday afternoon Tammy and Dave DeWind from Fairport, NY and their teenage boys went out fishing. We stayed down south between Stickney Pt and Midnight Pass and caught plenty of ladyfish and trout along with a redfish on D.O.A. Cal jigs, Gulp! Shrimp, and live shrimp.

I had two trips on Tuesday. In the morning Elizabeth Morgan and Ryan Boyer caught speckled trout, ladyfish, flounder, sheepshead, and jack crevelle on live shrimp near Big Pass. In the afternoon Sue and Gerald Cooley caught a bunch of speckled trout to 17" and ladyfish, along with a couple of flounder on jigs and shrimp near Midnight Pass.

Wednesday I picked up Harold Hutchins at the park under the Siesta Drive bridge. We worked our way north to the Moorings, catching speckled trout to 20", bluefish to 3 lbs, ladyfish, and flounder on Gulp! Shrimp and live shrimp. Fish were very active as the front approached the area.

Marty Davis and his 11 year old grandson Quin Murphy from Toledo, OH caught a mess of trout and ladyfish at the Moorings on Trigger-X shrimp and live shrimp. Working nearby docks and structure resulted in sheepshead and gag grouper. In the afternoon Bill Thiel from IL took his daughter Julie and 4 year old grand daughter Grace out for a few hours. Action was steady in Robert's Bay on big ladyfish and trout on free lined shrimp. Julie was holding the rod when a HUGE ladyfish hit like a freight train. She held on with both hands, clutching with all her strength as the drag screamed! Mom helped her and they eventually landed the fish.

Perseverance paid off on Saturday. Fairfield CT resident Scott Watson treated his friends from MN Patti and Jim Rich and their daughter Jessi to a fishing trip. It was quite windy early, but eased up a bit later in the day. So, at 1:30 we left CB's and headed north. Ladyfish were thick at the Field Club flat. Speckled trout to 17", ladyfish, flounder, and a nice Spanish mackerel hit free lined live shrimp and jigs at the Bird Key flats.Jessi finished up the trip with a 2 lb sheepshead under a dock.
