Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

A severe front shut down fishing early in the week. Winds were 20+ out of the northwest. Fishing picked up later in the week as winds subsided and the water began clearing. Snook, redfish, big jacks, large trout and Spanish mackerel were caught on pilchards and shrimp.
I fished the Myakka River on Tuesday. Post cold front conditions (strong n.e. wind, bluebird sky) made for tough fishing, but we landed a couple of bass and a 5 pound tarpon on D.O.A. jerk baits and two big tilapia on tiny chartreuse jigs.
Jim Mitchell from Longboat Key and his brother-in-law Charlie did not catch a ton of fish, but they did catch some quality ones. Charlie caught a 25" speckled trout on a pinfish and lost a nice snook on a pilchard and caught several mangrove snapper. Jim caught a big jack on a pilchard.
Friday was better as the water cleared up a bit. Ed Burt from New London, NH took out his 15 year old daughter Jonalyn and his father-inlaw John Carroll. Action was steady on Spanish mackerel to 2 pounds, speckled trout to 18", ladyfish, sea bass, and snapper hit pilchards and shrimp near Big Pass. We decided to try for some snook and jacks, so I netted up some pilchards. The first spot only produced a flounder. The second did better as Jonalyn completed her "Inshore slam", catching a pair of snook and a redfish. John caught a red and Ed landed a jack.
