Sarasota Fishing Report Capt Jim Klopfer

Capt. Jim Klopfer

Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was steady this week, though unspectacular. Snook, speckled trout, silver trout, Spanish mackerel, flounder, bluefish, jack crevelle, sea bass, ladyfish, sharks, mangrove snapper, and more were landed on charters this week. Most of the action took place on the deep flats near Big Pass using live shrimp.

Anthony Tripaldi and his girlfriend Beth from Brooklyn, NY caught Spanish mackerel, a nice bluefish, and slot trout near Big Pass on Sunday morning using live shrimp. I netted up some pilchards and went snook fishing, but only caught one small one near Phillippi Creek.

Monday I fished a group trip with a bunch of CB's guides. It was very breezy, but we caught trout, ladyfish, and mackerel on Gulp! Shrimp and D.O.A. CAL jigs at the Marina Jack and Yacht Club Channel flats.

Sarasota resident Dennis Dickenson promised his wife some fresh fish for dinner. So, we put several speckled trout and a pair of Spanish Mackerel in the box using live shrimp, then went after bigger game. We caught a decent snook and a couple of small ones on pilchards along with some mangrove snappers on the east side of Siesta Key.

Osprey resident Peggy Heaslip, her son Ben, and a couple of his friends fished with me on Thursday. Action was steady on speckled trout and ladyfish near the Ringling Bridge. They also caught snapper, flounder, Spanish mackerel, jacks, and a shark. All of the fish were caught on free lined shrimp.

Dustin Theobald from Upper Darby, PA fished with me on Friday morning. He caught several ladyfish and trout on jigs, then mentioned that he would rather catch a couple of quality fish, and hopefully a snook, over numbers of smaller fish. The baitfish were dimpling on the surface and I quickly had the well full of nice sized pilchards. A few hours later Dustin had an "inshore slam", landing 3 snook and a redfish near Siesta Key. The icing on the trip was several 8 pound jack crevelle.

Long time client Joe Puhy from West Bloomfield, MI took his wife out on Saturday. Action was steady on speckled trout, silver trout, Spanish mackerel, and ladyfish using live shrimp and pilchards. We finished up near Marina Jack with a good trout bite, landing a half dozen slot fish to 20" chumming with bait fish.
