Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was good this week, although the weather did make things challenging at times. A fairly stiff breeze blew from the west all week. But, we had excellent tides and the action on the deep flats continued to be very good for both speckled and silver trout. Spanish mackerel, sea bass, ladyfish, bluefish, and the occassional shark were also taken. Snook are in decent numbers along the mangrove shorelines. Mangrove snapper are schooling up under docks along Siesta Key.
Tom Tanner from Chelsea, MI treated his son Tom Jr, Amanda French, and Cody Lance to a morning of fishing on Sunday. Action was very steady on the deep grass near Big Pass. Tom and Tommy tossed gold D.O.A. CAL shad tail jigs and Amanda and Cody used live shrimp. The count was pretty even between the artificial and live bait anglers, with speckled trout to 18", a bunch of decent silver trout to 14", 3 Spanish mackerel, black sea bass, a blacktip shark, and ladyfish being landed. We fishined up in Robert's Bay, catching a snook and losing another, had 2 reds pull the hook, caught 3 decent mangrove snapper and a slot trout.
Brian Robinson, his father in law Dave Piper, and eleven year old son Quinn caught a nice mess of speckled and silver trout along with a couple of Spanish mackerel, jacks, sea bass, and ladyfish using live shrimp on the deep flats. We finished up with Quinn landing 2 snook and Dave catching one (their first ever for both) and Brian caught two mangrove snappers. All was done in Robert's Bay on shrimp.
Bill Walker, his daughter Kim, and granddaughter Mariah from Colorado Springs, CO had a good morning on Wednesday. Six year old Mariah started things off with a 21" trout, then hooked a nice bonnethead shark on her next cast! All three fought it. Silver trout and a bunch of speckled trout were then landed. We finished up the trip working a dock and Bill caught a small snook, Kim caught several mangs to 12", and Mariah caught more snapper and a ladyfish.
Ray Draper from TX and Chris Busbee from GA fished with me on Thursday. They caught silver trout to 14" and speckled trout to 22" on white Gulp! Shrimp on the flats near the Ringling Bridge, along with a Spanish mackerel, ladyfish, catfish, and sea bass. We spent a little time in shallow water and caught a pair of trout on Rapala X-Raps and a flounder on a jig.
Lindsay and Jeff Klein from Carmel, IN and their 6 year old son Carter braved the ominous-looking weather and went fishing on Friday. We got drizzled on a couple of times, but they were rewarded with a nice box of fish. A pair of 17" speckled trout, 8 silver trout, and a pair of Spanish mackerel along with mangrove snapper, sail cats, jack crevelle, and ladyfish hit free lined shrimp.
Fly fisherman Nick Frederick and his dad Nick fished early Saturday morning. Nick Sr caught speckled trout to 17", silver trout to 14", and a very nice sea bass on a Trigger-X Shrimp on a 1/4 ounce jig head. Son Nick caught speckled trout and a Spanish mackerel on all white and chartreuse/white Clousers. The Radio Tower was the best spot.
