Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was very good this week in Sarasota Bay, the inshore Gulf of Mexico, and in freshwater. Speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, jack crevelle, flounder, snapper, ladyfish, and more were caught on the deep grass flats using live bait and artificial lures. Docks, oyster bars, and mangrove shorelines in Robert's Bay are producing snook, redfish, snapper, and jacks. Rapala plugs produced at first light and live pilchards and hand-picked shrimp worked better later in the morning. Spanish mackerel and false albacore are working on the surface in the inshore Gulf of Mexico and hit flies, plugs, and silver spoons.
Rick and Cathy Fishbach from Chagrin Falls, OH and their friend Marc Rubinstein had a good inshore trip on Wednesday. We hit the bars just south of CB's Saltwater Outfitters at first light and put a slot trout in the box and released several more, along with ladyfish, and catfish. A move up to the flats near Big Sarasota Pass resulted in a couple of more keeper trout and a dozen "shorts", mangrove snapper to 12", jack crevelle, ladyfish, and a cutoff by a nice bluefish. We hit a dock on the way in and Cathy caught a redfish that was just in the slot at 18" All of the fish were caught on live shrimp.
Freshwater fishing remains good in Upper Myakka Lake, the Myakka River is still very high. Bluegill, bass, and speckled perch are hitting black Beetlespins and small jigs around the edges of weed beds. The bluegill still have roe and should bite good up to the next full moon. Sarasota resident Doc Dojutrek caught bluegill, crappie, and bass on charteuse and white 1/16 ounce spinnerbaits in Upper Myakka Lake Friday morning.
