Sarasota Fishing Report Capt Jim Klopfer 9/22/2012

Capt. Jim Klopfer

Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was very good on a variety of species this week using Rapala X-Raps, Gulp! Shrimp, and live pilchards and threadfins. The deep grass flats in Sarasota Bay near Big Pass and the docks in Robert's Bay produced most of the fish this week. Species landed included snook to 23", redfish to 29", speckled trout to 20", Spanish mackerel to 3 pounds, flounder to 16", jack crevelle to 4 pounds, sea bass, mangrove snapper, ladyfish, and big sailcats. S.W. winds had the beach a little churned up but the mackerel and false albacore fishing should be good this week in the inshore Gulf of Mexico as the winds turn out of the east. Bluegill, crappie, and bass are biting small spinnerbaits and jigs in both Lake Manatee and Upper Myakka Lake. The water is high and that usually results in good fishing.

On Sunday morning Christian Googan from Durham, NC and his father-in-law Steve Dixckman from Louisville, KY caught experienced steady action at Marker #5, the Yacht Club Channel, and the Radio Tower using Gulp! Shrimp on a 1/4 ounce jig head and olive Rapala X-Raps. It started off a bit slow, but once the tide turned to come in they caught several nice black sea bass, mangrove snapper, speckled trout, jack crevelle, ladyfish, and more.

Ed VanArtsdalen and Mark Shull from Pipersville, PA had an excellent trip this week. We left Centennial Park at first light and fish were breaking right at the mouth of the canal. I tied on two Rapala X-Raps and they caught jacks, ladyfish, and a Spanish mackerel for half an hour, nice way to start the trip! The Radio Tower was a little slow, so I ran out Big Pass to both catch bait and look for surface action. It was a bit rougher than expected, with just a few macks breaking here and there, so I caught bait and moved back inside. Anchoring and chumming at the Bird Key flats resulted in excellent action on speckled trout to 19", jacks, ladyfish, a pair of 2 lb mackerel, sea bass, snapper, and more. With dinner in the box, we decided to try for snook and reds. Docks in Robert's Bay gave up a "slam" for Mark; he caught 2 snook and 2 reds, one red a gorgeous 29" fish, using pilchards. We finished up with a jack frenzy as I emptied the bait well, great fun!

Laura Ritchey from Medina, OH and her dad Bill Ritchey from Akron, OH had a great morning on Friday fishing the deep grass flats near Big Pass. We started off catching trout, jacks, and a big sailcat on Gulp! Shrimp under corks near the Siesta Drive bridge. I saw a bunch of bait and filled the well with two tosses and moved to the edge of a nearby flat. For three hours they caught Spanish mackerel to 3 pounds, speckled trout to 18", ladyfish, jacks, flounder, and sea bass free lining live pilchards and threadfins. We finished up at a Siesta Key dock catching several jacks to 3 pounds, a 14" sea bass, and a 16" flounder.
