Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing remains very good in Sarasota Bay near Big Pass on a variety of species. Speckled trout and Spanish mackerel lead the way with ladyfish, jacks, sea bass, sharks, snapper, and grouper also being caught using live and artificial bait. Snook are hitting Rapalas at first light on the bottom of the outgoing tide near Stickney Pt. Action on the beach slowed a bit as the water temperature rose but there are still a lot of mackerel and some false albacore near Point of Rocks. One good front should really kick it into gear! Freshwater fishing has been good in the lakes for bass, speckled perch (crappie), and bluegill.
On Sunday morning Phil Hubbell, Ivana Jardim, and her son Pedro Jardim from Clearwater, FL. had a good day of mixed-bag fishing in Sarasota Bay near Big Pass. We started off using Gulp! Shrimp under corks at first light on a shallow bar. Phil caught a 20" trout and Ivana hooked a 3' shark which cut her off at the boat. We also caught smaller trout and some ladyfish. It slowed a bit so I netted up some bait. Anchoring on the edges of grass flats near Bird Key resulted in trout to 18", Spanish mackerel to 2 1/2 pounds, big sail cats, grouper, mangrove snapper, sea bass, and ladyfish. These clients had very little experience, but this kind of fishing is easy and anyone can catch a bunch of fish!
Warren Persky from Ft. Lauderdale, FL fished with me later in the week and had a great day! We started off catching a nice snook around 25" on a Rapala X-Rap near the Stickney Pt Bridge first thing. Then, we moved up to the deep grass flats at Bird Key and free lined shrimp to catch speckled trout to 18", ladyfish, and snapper. There was a bunch of bait on the surface so I netted up some and went to Marker # 5 to chum. I saw my buddy Capt Roy String there, and between us we had breaking fish as far as you could see! Warren caught trout, ladyfish, snapper, and sea bass on every cast until it was time to go home.
I fished Upper Myakka Lake a couple of times this week and had success using black Beetlespins for specks and bass. Best bite is first thing in the morning before the sun gets very high and again late afternoon. The water is still vey high, flood stage, in the park, so not much happening in the river.
