Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

High pressure and strong northeast winds resulted in fishing going from excellent to pretty good. I had one angler trips this week so the total numbers were down, but action was steady with quality fish and plenty of variety. The deep flats behind Bird Key in the Yacht Club Channel were very productive and a bit out of the wind. Speckled trout to 20", silver trout to 14", Spanish mackerel to 3 pounds, jacks, mangrove snapper, gag grouper, black sea bass, and more hit free lined live shrimp and pilchards along with glow Gulp! Shrimp. Snook, redfish, and jacks hit Rapala X-Raps and large live pilchards along mangrove shorelines in Robert's Bay and in the canals on the east side of Siesta Key.
Charles Boyter from NJ caught snook and jack crevelle on Rapala X-Raps at first light near the mouth of Phillippi Creek on Monday. After that bite slowed, I caught bait and we fished several flats near Bird Key, catching silver trout, mackerel, a pair of 18" speckled trout, jacks, grouper, snapper, sea bass, and ladyfish. We finished up with another couple of snook and jacks in Robert's Bay on pilchards.
Terry Mark from Olean, NY had a good day on Tuesday. We started off catching speckled trout to 20" and mangrove snapper to 14" on hand-picked shrimp near Marker #5. I caught bait later in the morning and moved behind Bird Key as the wind began to crank up. It was protected and the fish bit good with Terry landing 10 or so nice Spanish, trout, jacks, silver trout, sea bass, snapper, and grouper. He ended up with 40 fish all together
On Thursday I targeted snook, reds and jacks using large pilchards along the mangrove shorelines in Robert's Bay. The tally for the morning was 10 snook, mostly small but up to 22", several mangrove snapper to 11", a pair of 16" speckled trout and a 21" redfish.
My wife and I are going to Lake Louisa, near Orlando, for a little vacation. Hopefully we will get a bit of fishing in despite the breezy conditions.
