Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

I was on vacation at Lake Louisa State Park early in the week. It was still breezy from Sandy, but we had fun and found a protected spot, the Crooked River, which connects two lakes and caught a few bream and catfish. It is a neat place with nice cabins only two hours from Sarasota. Later in the week as the winds subsided I got out both freshwater and saltwater fishing. The water in Sarasota Bay has a little color from the wind but really isn't too bad. Speckled trout are plentiful on the deep flats though a lot of them are small, ladyfish and Spanish mackerel are also on the flats and in the passes. Redfish and snook are scattered throughout the area along mangrove shorelines and on oyster bars. Action on the beach should pick up as soon as the Gulf of Mexico settles down. The cool snap has really kicked the freshwater fishing into gear. Bass, bream, and catfish are biting in the Myakka River and Upper Myakka Lake. The water level in the river is finally down and just about perfect. Black Beetlespins and worms worked the best.
Bill Skinner and his two bothers in law Scott Graf and Craig Graf, all from the Akron, OH area, caught a lot of fish on Thursday using Cotee jigs and Gulp! Shrimp. We started off on the deep flats in the Yacht Club Channel catching speckled trout, ladyfish, and sea bass. The tide was falling and almost at dead low, so I moved into Big Pass and they had great action on ladyfish in shallow water using gold Cotee jigs. The tide switched and we moved to the Radio Tower flat where "Molting" colored Gulp! Shrimp fooled flounder to 14", speckled trout, ladyfish, a 2 lb Spanish mackerel, and a half dozen nice sea bass to 13".
I fished the Myakka River inside the state park on Friday and did very well on big bluegills and shellcracker using worms and Beetlespins. We finished off the morning with a ten pound channel cat, great fun on 4 lb spinning tackle.
