Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

The weather was warm and mild this week and fishing was good with a variety of species being caught. Snook, redfish, speckled trout, bluefish, flounder, snapper, and ladyfish were caught this week on charters. The deep flats near both Big Pass and New Pass are holding trout, mackerel, bluefish, flounder, and ladyfish. Jigs and live shrimp worked the best. Creeks and canals are holding snook, redfish, and sheepshead.
Trips to the Myakka River resulted in snook, gar, and bluegill using Rapalas and Beetlespins. Tim Palmer, an associate at CB's, tried his hand at fly fishing on Tuesday. It was pretty slow, the tide was just not moving and the unseasonably warm weather has the water temperature a bit too high. One good cold snap should get them going.
Sarasota resident Dan Gallagher had his son Colm in from San Diego and they decided to go fishing. Action was steady with four very nice Spanish mackerel, speckled trout to 16", and a flounder going home for dinner. It was very foggy in the morning so we started off in Phillippi Creek where Colm caught a snapper and a redfish on live shrimp and they had on a couple of sheepshead that escaped. The tide quit so we moved to the flats at Marker #5 where Colm caught several ladyfish and got cut off by a bluefish and Dan put a keeper flounder in the box. Both were using gold Cotee jigs. The dolphins moved in and shut down the fishing so we moved to the deep flats near Bird Key where they caught Spanish mackerel to 4 pounds, speckled trout to 16", and ladyfish free lining shrimp.
