Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

This week really illustrated the diverse fishing opportunities that Sarasota offers! On Monday we fished Sarasota Bay and did well on Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, and ladyfish free lining live shrimp. On Wednesday I caught crappie, largemouth bass, and bream in Upper Myakka Lake using black Beetlespins. On Thursday I fished the tidal portion of the Myakka and caught a bunch of snook to 28" and a pair of chunky bass tossing Rapala X-Raps. Back in the bay on Saturday catching pompano, sheepshead, trout, ladyfish, and redfish.
Bonnie and Dan Czepiel caught Spanish mackerel to 3 pounds, speckled trout to 16", and big ladyfish at Marker #5, the Bird Key flats, and the Radio Tower flat using live shrimp and gold Cotee jigs on Monday morning before the wind and rain chased us home.
I fished Upper Myakka Lake on Wednesday and the tidal potion of the river Thursday. Crappie, bream, and bass hit Beetlespins in the lake. The snook bite was fantastic on Thursday morning! Snook to 28" hit gold/black Rapala X-Raps, along with a pair of 2 pound largemouth. This winter snook fishing is just getting cranked up and will go into March.
Tommy Hyser from Cambridge, MD fished with me on Saturday and the fish bit pretty good. Speckled trout and ladyfish were plentiful at the Radio Tower flat and Marker #5. We also caught a decent pompano and a pair of flounder. All the fish came on gold Cotee jigs. A run to New Pass resulted in more ladyfish and a couple of mackerel on jigs and Rapalas. We picked up some shrimp and hit a couple of canals in Robert's Bay and landed several nice sheepshead and a couple of small redfish.
