Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sunday morning was cold and windy and Monday morning a bit chilly, but the weather the rest of the week was fantastic. And so was the fishing! Big ladyfish kept rods bent and anglers very busy. Other species landed on charters this week include snook, speckled trout, silver trout, pompano, flounder, sea bass, gag grouper, jack crevelle, and bluefish. Cotee jigs, Rapala X-Raps, Gulp! Shrimp and live shrimp were used this week. The deep flats near both passes were the best spots.
On Monday morning Jack Plym and his 8 year old son Charlie from New York City caught speckled trout to 20" and big ladyfish free lining shrimp in the channels and deep grass edges near Bird Key. Numbers were not great but there were some quality fish. On Monday after noon John Brennan from Brookfield, WI took his three teenage daughters Laura, Cari, and Teresa out fishing. We basically spent the trip at the middlegrounds catching slot trout, plenty of ladyfish, a 3 pound Spanish mackerel and Laura topped off the trip with a nice pompano. Most of the fish hit shrimp but John used gold Cotee jigs and Gulp! Shrimp. Laura caught the mack trolling a Rapala X-Rap. Great trip on a beautiful afternoon, what better way to close out the year!
Tuesday morning Lou Hassan started the year off right; by going fishing! She took her 2 sons Dean (17) and Grant (12) out on Tuesday morning. We started off at Marker #5 catching a speckled trout, jack crevelle, and a couple of ladyfish. We moved to the middlegrounds and spent the rest of the trip there catching big ladyfish, black sea bass to 13", and a pompano on gold Cotee jigs. Lou also caught a 2 lb Spanish mackerel on a trolled Rapala.
Steve Laliberte, his son Dave, and son-in-law Alex caught Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, black sea bass, and loads of ladyfish at the middlegrounds, Country Club shores, and the Moorings using Cotee jigs and Gulp! Shrimp on Wednesday. Alex had "big fish" honors with a 3 1/2 lb mack.
Pat Cotter, a city boy from Chicago, had never caught a fish in his life. We took care of that on Thursday. Pat, his wife Amy and son Finn experienced very good action at several spots. We started in the Intracoastal near Siesta Drive where they caught big ladyfish and Amy landed a nice Spanish mackerel and a 20" gag grouper on the falling tide. A move to Big Pass did not produce much but the tide turned to come in and the "catching" resumed. Free lining shrimp at he Bird Key flats resulted in speckled trout, silver trout, flounder, a mackerel, sea bass, and ladyfish. We finished up with a big ladyfish flurry, action was non-stop. They got tired of reeling them in and called it a day a bit early.
I got a last minute cal from CB's to run an afternoon trip on Friday. Ryan Moffitt from Burlington, NC needed to get out and do a little fishing. We started off at the Field Club flat catching ladyfish on nearly every cast using Cotee jigs. After enough of the ladies, we went after something a bit more challenging. Ryan fished Phillippi Creek hard with Rapalas and while there wasn't a ton of action, Ryan landed his first snook and a pair of nice jack crevelle.
