Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Is it January or June? The weather has been fantastic so far in 2013! Mid day temperatures were around 80 degrees with lows in the mid 60s and no rail. Fish are thick on the deep flats near the passes. Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, silver trout, flounder, ladyfish, bluefish, gag grouper, mangrove snapper, black drum, sheepshead, and sea bass were all caught by clients on trips this week. River fishing resulted in snook, largemouth bass, and gar using Rapala X-Raps.
Renee and Chris Boisen along with their freind Teri Bumphrey from Orion, IL had a good day early in the week. The tide was still going out in the morning, so we made several drifts in the Intracoastal Waterway and caught a grouper and a few ladyfish using Cotee jigs. We moved to Big Pass where Chris caught a nice Spanish mackerel on a Gulp! Shrimp. The breeze picked up making jigging difficult, so we anchored up on deep grass edges near Bird Key and free lined live shrimp to fool speckled trout to 19", flounder, ladyfish, and sea bass. They finished up with 4 keeper trout and the mackerel, plenty for a meal or two.
Ryan Kraehling and Rob Maciag from Ontario experienced good action on Thursday. Fishing near Siesta Drive on the outgoing tide resulted in fast action on big ladyfish with a couple of Spanish mackerel and bluefish mixed in. After the tide changed we did well on speckled trout on the Bird Key flats.
Long time client and winter resident Peggy Heaslip and her brother-in-law Paul Turner from Vancouver, British Colombia.ad a great trip on Friday! We started off catching a few ladyfish in the Intracoastal waterway near Siesta Drive. We hit a dock on bird Key and caught several gag grouper, a 14" mangrove snapper, a flounder, and Peg got smoked by something big; probably a nice grouper. A move to the deep grass near Bird Key resulted in Spanish mackerel to 4 pounds, speckled trout to 24", and tons of ladyfish. Action was non-stop! We finished up working a canal in Roberts Bay and caught several more snapper to 12", along with sheepshead and black drum. All of the fish were caught on live shrimp.
Saturday morning found me fishing the Myakka River. Fishing was fair, July Allen and Jennifer Vogel, both from Tampa, teamed up for a dozen snook, a bass, and a gar. All of the fish were caught on Rapala X-Raps.
