Sarasota Fishing Report Capt Jim Klopfer 7/6/2013

Capt. Jim Klopfer
July 6, 2013
Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

My first trip of the week was on Friday, it rained on Monday, I had doctor appointments on Tuesday and Wednesday and decided to stay off the water on the 4th of July. Despite a LOT of fresh water in the bay from heavy rains, fishing was decent on the deep flats near Big Pass. Bluefish, Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, black tip sharks, bonnetthead sharks, sea bass, mangrove snapper, flounder, ladyfish, and catfish were caught on the two trips. Live shrimp caught most of the fish.

On Friday Chad and XXXX Barker from Indianapolis, IN and their thre children Brenna (9), Dylan (12), and Carinne (14) had a good morning trip. Using Gulp! Shrimp at the Radio Tower flat, they caught slot speckled trout, a 14" flounder, sea bass, mangrove snapper, ladyfish, and catfish. We had one exciting moment when a hundred pound tarpon followed in a hooked catfish right up to the boat, mouthed it, then boiled the water as it saw the boat and swam away. We finished up closer to Big Pass where the water was cleaner catching more trout, sea bass, three Spanish mackerel (around two pounds) and a small shark. Fun trip with action, variety, and dinner!

On Saturday I had Ralph Primavera and his 16 year old son Christopher on the boat. Fishing was OK, a little slow to start off but we did finish with some good action near Otter Key. Using live shrimp at Marina Jacks, Radio Tower, and in the Yacht Club Channel, the boys caught speckled trout to 16", bluefish to 1 1/2 pounds, Spanish mackerel, ladyfish, mangrove snapper, sail cats, and a bonnetthead shark.
