Sarasota Fishing Report capt Jim Klopfer 8/17/2013

Capt. Jim Klopfer

Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was very good once again this week. The Radio Tower was the most consistent spot and as has been the case, chumming with baitfish produced steady action. Speckled trout, silver trout, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, jack crevelle, mangrove snapper, sea bass, gag grouper, and ladyfish kept rods bent and clients smiling! Trips averaged around 60-70 fish and all charters produced enough fish for a meal or two.

Steve and Janine Weiss from Morristown, NJ and their son Ian and a very good morning on Monday. We basically fished one spot; the Radio Tower. We started off casting large live shrimp under corks. Janine caught a nice 19" speckled trout and the boys caught some under-sized trout. The bite slowed so I went to catch bait. It was a bit tough, but with a little patience I filled the well. Chumming the same Radio Tower flat resulted in non-stop action on trout, jacks, mangrove snapper, Spanish mackerel, and ladyfish. They finished up with several trout and a half dozen snappers for Clayton's Grill to cook up for them.

Rick Carney and his teenage sons Kevin (17) and Brian (15) experienced a similar trip on Tuesday. As I idled north near the Siesta Drive Bridge I came across a nice wad of bait. Two casts later I had a well full of threadies, not as desirable as pilchards, but good enough. I stopped at Marker #5 and action was fair. After about 20 minutes and ten fish or so I left, just could not get them cranked up. On the way to the Radio tower I saw another bunch of bait and "loaded up" again. I went to the same spot as Monday and action was non-stop. Speckled trout to 18", Spanish mackerel to 2 pounds, jack crevelle, mangrove snapper, gag grouper and ladyfish kept the boys busy. They kept enough for dinner, and they are also having Clayton's cook them up.

Tom Beall from Pittsburg, PA, his 12 year old son Liam and son-in-law Marlos Goes had a great trip on Friday! The weather was a bit unstable at first light, it was blowing 20+ with rain in the area. It looked a bit "iffy", but we decided to give it a try, and that was a good call. The wind laid down and we wrecked them. I caught enough bait in five minutes and spent the entire morning at the Radio Tower. The boys caught around 75 fish, including Spanish mackerel to 3 pounds, speckled trout to 18", silver trout to 12", bluefish to 2 pounds, jack crevelle, ladyfish, gag grouper, sea bass and for a few minutes had a crazy mangrove snapper bite going. I was chumming with dead threadies and the mangs rose up up a cloud, very cool in the clear water. We caught a couple dozen or so including eight nice keepers.

I took out Jessica Bell, a Sarasota local, on Saturday. Jess is a pretty girl who likes to fish and I use this time of year to get pics and material for upcoming articles and other projects. So, I took a bunch of nice pictures and then she fished a little bit. She caught speckled trout, ladyfish, and finished up with a pair of nice Spanish mackerel at Marker #5 using bait.
