Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing remains outstanding on the deep grass flats near both Big Pass and New Pass. The flats on the north end of Siesta Key have been particularly productive. Speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, pompano, jacks, snapper, grouper, bluefish, sea bass, ladyfish, and more were hooked on trips early this week. We even had a 50 lb tarpon on for 2 jumps before he "spooled" us!
On Sunday I took out a group using a CB's pontoon boat; there were too many for my boat. These are great fishing boats, especially with kids involved, plenty of room to move around along with comfortable seating and shade. We began the trip with a bang by hooking an estimated 50 pound tarpon near Bird Key. It jumped twice before dumping the spool, very exciting! We put 4 Spanish mackerel in the box before the rain chased us to cover. Once it cleared, we resumed the "catching" at the Marina Jack flat, putting more macks, some nice mangrove snapper, several big black sea bass, and a decent pompano in the cooler. All the fish hit free lined live shrimp.
Jessica Dean went out with me and the action was non-stop on the flats near Big Pass. I loaded up on bait, mostly threadies, and we wrecked them. Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, bluefish, ladyfish, mangrove snapper, jacks, and more hit live bait and flies cast into the chum. It got VERY hot so we called it a morning early with a nice mess of fish to clean.
I will be off the water for a couple of weeks to get some "routine maintenance" done on me and the boat. Hopefully the bonita and mackerel action will be going in the inshore Gulf!
