Sarasota Fishing Report Capt Jim Klopfer 10/5/2013

Capt. Jim Klopfer
October 5, 2013
Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was steady on the deep grass flats this week. I concentrated most of my efforts at the Radio Tower and flats near Bird Key. Speckled trout to 18", Spanish mackerel to 4 pounds, black sea bass to 14', ladyfish, jack crevelle, mangrove snapper, gag grouper, flounder, pompano, sailcats, and more hit Gulp! Shrimp, and live bait this week.

Louis Gagnon and his fiancee Chris fished with me early in the week and experienced very good action along with variety and quality. I picked them up at the Ritz Carlton and we ran across and cast Gulp! Shrimp at the Radio Tower. Chris had barely fished but took lessons well and they caught speckled trout, ladyfish jacks, a couple of nice sea bass, gag grouper and lost a decent pompano. The breeze picked up so I went into New Pass, caught bait, and then ran in behind Bird Key to get a break from the wind. It took a little bit of chumming to get them going, but once I did it was a bite on every cast! Trout, jacks, snapper, grouper, flounder, sea bass, ladfyfish and Spanish mackerel kept them busy. A lot of big mackerel were hooked and made long runs, but most of them broke off. We did get several to the boat with the largest pushing 4 pounds.

On Friday Nancy and Tim Smalley from Minneapolis, MN had another good trip. We left Ken Thompson Park, idled out to the Radio Tower flat, and for an hour had steady action on jacks, a bunch of ladyfish, gag grouper, trout, a small pompano, and a Spanish mackerel free lining live shrimp and casting Gulp! The bite slowed so I ran around the corner, caught bait, and headed to one of my Bird Key flats. Once the chum got them going, we had good action on trout to 18", several Spanish mackerel, lane and mangrove snapper, big sailcats, jacks, and ladyfish. With dinner in the box and Nancy's arms tired, we decided to spend the last hour trying to catch a snook. Despite the very nice bait, I could not find a snook or red. We did finish up on a bar landing several more slot trout.
