Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Action on the deep flats continues to be good for a variety of species. I only fished one charter this week as I was on vacation up in north Georgia. On that trip Lynn and Joe Sorrentino from Ocala, FL caught Spanish mackerel to 2 1/2 lbs, speckled trout to 17", sea bass to 14", gag grouper, jack crevelle, ladyfish, and sail cats on live shrimp and pilchards in the Yacht Club channel. After a couple hours of steady action, we decided to try for bigger game. Joe caught two snook, one 18" and the other 23" and had a couple more hard hits. We were using pilchards near Selby Gardens. The tide quit and we called it a morning.
I did a little prospecting on the Myakka River this week. I took fellow CB's guide Ed hurst out on Thursday to do a little fly fishing. He caught a snook and a gar on a purple Puglisi pattern. On Friday Bonnie Czepiel did a bit better, she landed 6 snook and lost a pair of big fish trolling #8 gold/black Rapala X-Raps. She also caught a big tilapia and 2 smaller ones on nightcrawlers.
