Sarasota Fishing Report Capt Jim Klopfer 11/23/2013

Capt. Jim Klopfer

Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

I did a mix of saltwater, freshwater, and brackish water river fishing this week. Rapala X-Raps, gold Cotee jigs, D.O.A. CAL baits, and Gulp! Shrimp produced speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, jacks, and ladyfish on the deep flats and in Big Pass. The new Rapala jointed BX Minnow fooled snook to 33" in the Myakka River. Largemouth bass and tilapia hit black spinnerbaits and chartreuse curly tail jigs. Action was slow in Upper Myakka lake, a few stumpknocker and crappie took small baitfish patterns on fly and black Beetlespins. The water level is pretty low.

Early in the week tides were right for fishing the Myakka River in Venice. I prefer a high, outgoing tide. Using the new Rapala jointed BX Minnow, I caught several snook in the slot, lost a couple more and landed a couple of small fish. I also caught largemouth bass on black spinnerbaits and tilapia on a tiny jig.

Sarasota resident Doc Dojutrek and his friend Bill Kish from Cleveland, OH had a decent trip later in the week. Action was fast at the Radio Tower using Gulp! and D.O.A. CAL baits. Ladyfish, jacks, and trout kept the rods bent. I moved to a shallow bar near Selby and they caught Spanish mackerel and ladfyfish using Rapalas and jigs. Another move, this time to Big Pass, resulted in fast action on bluefish, jacks, and ladyfish. We decided to try some spots for snook and redfish, but without much luck.
