Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Mother Nature did not make things easy for us this week. Most days were either breezy or rainy, or both. The best action was on the deep flats and in holes as the tide was very low in the morning. Gold DOA jigs and live shrimp fooled trout to 20", pompano, bluefish, jacks, and ladyfish. Small snook hit Rapala plugs in the Myakka River.
Sunday was a rain out. On Monday C D Duncan, Tom Miller, and Frank Austin, all friends from Charleston, West Virginia had a good morning casting jigs at Marker # 5, the Radio Tower, and the Middlegrounds. They wanted a few fish for dinner and put 3 pompano (Tom caught all 3), a pair of nice bluefish and an 18" trout that hit a trolled Rapala in the box. They had steady action on those plus ladyfish, jacks, and smaller trout.
On Tuesday Jen and Dave Buckley from Gettyburg, PA went out with me. I stopped at a grass flat with a sharp drop off and on the first cast Jen landed a 20" trout on a live shrimp, nice! Action was steady on trout, ladyfish, and jacks using shrimp and jigs.
I started the year off with a river snook trip on the Myakka. Kevin Schapley from North Port went out and the bite was fair, we caught a few snook but nothing big and a channel cat that took a Rapala. The forecast for Thursday was wind by mid morning and since my client had his 3 daughters, we canceled. Friday and Saturday were cold and windy.
