Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well, after several mild years, it looks like we are going to have a "real" Florida winter this time. There was a small window Monday morning before the wind cranked up. A variety of species hit jigs on the deep grass flats with the Middlegrounds being the best spot. Tuesday and Wednesday were cold and breezy, Thursday was overcast with some rain. I fished the Myakka River on Friday and we landed a 34" snook and lost another big one. This is a unique trip that very few guides in the area offer. Clients get to see the "real Florida" and every trip provides the opportunity to catch a trophy snook along with largemouth bass, juvenile tarpon, and gar.
I fished with Ed Devries and Matt Kalhemegan, both from Indiana, on Monday. A severe front was moving through and we had a small window to fish. It was foggy first thing, then cleared up. They cast gold and glow DOA jigs on the deep flats at the Radio Tower, Middlegrounds, and Marker # 5. They also caught a few fish on trolled Rapala X-Raps. Bluefish to 3 pounds, speckled trout, jack crevelle, flounder, and loads of ladyfish were landed. Just as the trip was ending, the front moved through, the temperature dropped ten degrees and the wind cranked up to 25 knots. Time to go! Tuesday and Wednesday were cold and breezy.
I fished with Sarasota resident Doc Dojutrek on the Myakka River on Friday with outstanding results! One thing the cold weather did was get the river fishing fired up, a lot more snook moved upstream. Casting Rapala X-Raps and Jointed BX Minnows resulted in several bass to 2 pounds and a dozen snook, including a 34" fish and another big one that we just could not handle. This river fishing should cobntinue until the water starts to get too warm, which is usually late March or early April.
