Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Once again, weather was the story this week. I was only able to get out twice this week as a couple of fronts moved through bringing wind and cold with them. The best action is still on the deep flats in 6 to 10 feet of water using jigs. The Middlegrounds, Radio Tower, and the Moorings were the best spots for me this week.
I had a decent trip on Friday with Doc Dojutrek, John Englander, and Bill Kish. We left 10th street at 10:00 a.m. to let it warm up a bit. The first stop was the Radio Tower and I was surprised to see Spanish mackerel working on the surface. We caught a couple and a few ladyfish using DOA CAL jigs and Gulp! Shrimp. A move to the Marina Jack flat resulted in some speckled trout and a few ladyfish. We then hit some docks along Bird Key in search of sheepshead. We had a couple on that shook off and caught a few mangrove snapper and grouper, but it really wasn't going on. The water coming in the pass was pretty dirty. My buddy Capt Rick Grassett called and said he was doing pretty good on bluefish and mackerel at the Moorings, so I ran up there. The water was very clean and we caught a few bluefish and ladyfish. Thanks Rick! We finished up at the north end of the Middlegrounds with a pretty steady bite over the last two hours. Ladyfish, trout, and decent Spanish mackerel provided steady action.
The water temperature was in the mid 50's. Once the water cleans up and warms up a bit, action should continue to be good on all of the deep grass flats throughout the area. I did not get out to the Myakka River this week, but the cold should only improve the fishing.
