Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Weather continues to be the story, it kept me from fishing several days this week. Water temperatures are in the upper 50's, which is cold for our fish. I ran both of my saltwater charters early in the week before the front, and did most of my fishing south of Blackburn Pt. Pompano, ladyfish, jacks, and Spanish mackerel were caught on live shrimp fished on a Cotee jig head. Most of the fish were in the channel or on the edges. I attribute this to the water being so cold. Snook and bass are biting in the Myakka River.
On Monday Tim Wilhelm from Ann Arbor, MI took out his kids Georgia and Zack, and his nephew Leo. This was my fourth trip with Tim and his family, and as usual, Georgia spanked the boys, catching the most pompano. The total for the boat was ten. We worked the edge of the Intracoastal between Markers 19 and 21 near Nokomis with live shrimp on a jig head. They also caught plenty of ladyfish and a nice Spanish mackerel. Plenty of fish for everyone, including Capt Jim!
On Tuesday I picked up Peg Heaslip and her neighbor Frank Lovell at Frank's dock, just south of Blackburn Point. We started off catching several jack crevelle on jigs right near the bridge, then moved south to look for the pompano. Unfortunately, we could not escape the ladyfish and could not find the pomps. But, they did catch quite a few fish.
A severe front moved through Tuesday afternoon, bringing cold and wind with it. The rest of the week was chilly and breezy. I did fish the Myakka on Saturday afternoon by myself for a couple of hours. The water temperature was 60 degrees. I caught a couple of snook and a bass on Rapalas.
