Sarasota Fishing Report Capt Jim Klopfer 5/3/2014

Capt. Jim Klopfer
May 3, 2014
Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

The wind returned this week, resulting in a little more "color" in the water as well as some challenging conditions. While clients on charters this week did not land a great amount in terms of numbers, a lot of quality fish were caught. Snook to 30", speckled trout to 23", black drum to 4 pounds, Spanish mackerel to 5 pounds, bluefish, jacks, gag grouper, sea bass, flounder, and ladyfish were caught this week. Big Pass, The Moorings, and mangrove shorelines in Robert's Bay were the top spots. Live shrimp, Gulp! Shrimp, Rapalas, and DOA CAL jigs all caught nice fish this week.

On Monday Bill Jodice from South Windsor, CT took his son Kevin and Kevin's girlfriend Allie out on a fishing charter. Action was steady in Big Pass and on the deep flats near Bird Key and along Longboat Key. Spanish mackerel, speckled trout, bluefish, jacks, gag grouper, flounder and a lot of ladyfish were caught. The boys used jigs and caught more numbers, but Allie caught the "quality" fish free lining a shrimp.

Scot Miller and his 11 year old son Aiden from Wauconda, IL fished with me on Tuesday. We started early in hopes of catching a snook. Scot caught a jack then had a BIG snook break him off. Action slowed so me moved to the deep grass and caught ladyfish, jacks, grouper, and sea bass. We finished up working an oyster car and caught a nice black drum and 2 flounder on Gulp! and Scot hooked a couple of snook on a Rapala Skitterprop.

Neil and Ryan Genco, from the Buffalo, NY had a pretty good trip on Wednesday. We started off in Big Pass, casting jigs and free-lining live shrimp. On the first drift, we caught a jack and then got "freight-trained" twice, one on a jig and the other on a shrimp. We landed one of them, which turned out to be a BIG Spanish mackerel. Action slowed and we moved to the flats, catching sea bass, speckled trout, jacks, and ladyfish. We ran up to the Moorings, where is was sporadic, but we did put two slot trout on ice using shrimp under popping corks.

Bruce Bottorff from Indiana and his daughter Beth Reis fished with me on Thursday. We did not catch a lot of fish, but did land some quality trout, including a nice 23" fish that Beth caught on a free lined shrimp. Several others in the slot were caught, along with ladyfish, mackerel, jacks, and sea bass.

Sarasota residents Doc Dojutrek, Bill Kish, and John Englander ran a 6 hour charter on Friday. We caught a few fish at most spots in and near Big Pass and New Pass, mostly ladyfish but we did catch a 19" speckled trout, all on jigs. Then we hit some mangrove shorelines where John was rewarded with a gorgeous 30" snook that hit a white Gulp! with a chartreuse tail. Saturday was a rain-out.
