Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

I only ran 2 charters this week as I took a little vacation to do some houseboating on the St Johns River. Speckled trout continue to be the most reliable species on the deeper flats in Sarasota Bay. Marina Jacks and the Yacht Club Channel were the best spots. Live shrimp was the top producer though clients also had success fly fishing. Spanish mackerel, redfish, snapper, jacks, and ladyfish were also landed on charters this week.
On Sunday Doug Griesel and his fiancee Becky Briber from Jay, Vermont went out on a charter. Doug fly fished the entire time while Becky used live shrimp. We started off at the Marina Jack flat and had steady action. Doug caught speckled trout and jacks on a chartreuse/white Clouser. Becky hooked trout, jacks, ladyfish, and a nice Spanish mackerel. The wind picked up and we moved behind Bird Key and caught more trout along with a mangrove snapper. Several were in the slot, but we were catch-and-release that day.
I was gone Monday through Friday, cruising on a houseboat on the St Johns River near Deland, FL. It was a lot of fun, though fishing was pretty slow, the water was quite muddy. Still, we managed enough bream and a small bass for a fish fry. Yes, we fishing guides also go fishing on our vacations!
Back at it on Saturday with buddies JerryAnderson and Tom Karas from Evergreen, CO. A pretty strong front had moved through the previous day, and conditions were classic "post cold front"; blue-bird skies and a northeast wind. The boys caught 5 keeper trout to 20", jack crevelle, ladyfish, and snapper near Bird Key on live shrimp. We finished up with a 17" redfish under a dock along Siesta Key. Fair action, but a lot of fun with great guys!
