Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing was decent this week on the deep grass flats and in Big Pass. Speckled trout continue to be the most reliable species, with fish to 20" being caught by clients this week. Live shrimp under a popping cork produced the best. Jack crevelle and ladyfish provided some catch-and-release fun. Gag grouper and mangrove snapper were caught near structure in Big Pass on shrimp. I took the last few days of the week off to get some work done on the house and boat.
On Sunday the Fernandez family from Miami, FL went out on a fishing charter. We kinda got a late start and the bite on the flats was slow, although we did land a 20" speckled trout. A move to the deeper water of Big Pass proved a good idea as the gang landed a bunch of keeper mangrove snapper and several gag grouper on live shrimp. Good action and good eats!
Later in the week, Sarasota resident Nick Frederick had his son Nick Jr in town for a trip. Fishing was fair, though it should have been better with the strong, incoming tide. Still, they landed a pair of slot trout (and another nice one shook off) along with plenty of "shorts", jack crevelle, ladyfish, and other species. Most of the fish hit live shrimp though we did catch several on jigs. The Middlegrounds was the best spot.
