Sarasota fishing report Capt Jim Klopfer 6/21/2014

Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Finally!! The bait has arrived! It is small, but getting better everyday. Most of my fish caught this week were the result of chumming a deep flat and catching fish on hooked pilchards, pinfish, and grunts, though clients also landed fish on shrimp and jigs. Speckled trout were one again the highlight, with trout to 25", silver trout, Spanish mackerel to 2 pounds, bluefish to 3 pounds, black sea bass to 14", mangrove snapper to 12", gag grouper, sharks, flounder to 15", jack crevelle, ladyfish, and more caught by anglers on charters this week. Marker #5, Big Pass, Bird Key, and the Radio Tower were the most productive spots.

On Monday Lori Major took her son Jake and boyfriend Chris out on a charter. They experienced steady action on a wide variety of species. We started off casting Gulp! Shrimp on jig heads and under noisy corks at the Radio Tower, catching bluefish, ladyfish, silver and speckled trout, jacks, and catfish. A move to Big Pass resulted in a few ladyfish and a bluefish on CAL jigs. I netted up some bait and the fish came to the chum. Speckled trout to 17", silver trout, Spanish mackerel, black sea bass, ladish, jacks, and snapper kept the rods bent.

Fishing was good for Ryan Slabaugh and his sons Grant (12) and Caleb (17) from Hartville, OH on Tuesday. We started off casting jigs at the Radio Tower, catching bluefish, trout, snapper, sea bass, and ladyfish. The bite slowed and I moved to Big Pass, where the ladyfish were plentiful. I netted up some bait and hit Marker #5 and Bird Key, both were a bit slow. We finished off with very good action at the radio Tower on jacks, ladyfish, trout, and Spanish mackerel. Caleb landed a very nice trout, around 25".

Chuck Rakaczky and his son Chuckie (15) from Pittsburg, PA went out on a charter with me on Wednesday. Things started off a bit slow, as we cast jigs at Marina Jacks and in Big Pass, just a bluefish and a few ladyfish. I netted up some bait and hit the Radio Tower, where action was non-stop for an hour and a half on speckled trout to 21", silver trout, bluefish, nice sea bass, Spanish mackerel, jack crevelle, and ladyfish.

Richard Brumley from Alpharetta, GA fished with me on Thursday. Richad wanted a few fish for dinner, so we worked the deep grass flats near Bird Key and the Radio Tower. Richard caught a nice flounder, a few short trout, a shark, ladyfish, and for whatever reason, a bunch of catfish on hand-picked shrimp. So, time to net bait and chum, and in short order the trout bite was on! A half dozen speckled trout between 16" and 20" came to the net, along with Spanish mackerel, short trout, ladyfish, and jacks. We finished up near the Twin Bridges, putting two mangrove snapper on ice.

I finished up my week with a very good trip with Bob Slayden, his son Scott, and grandson Porter (15) all from Atlanta, GA. I went right to my bait spot first thing, loaded up, and from then on the action was good. Free lining pilchards into the chum along deep grass edges produced several speckled trout over 20", more in the slot, a half dozen Spanish mackerel, gag grouper, mangrove snapper, sea bass, ladyfish, jacks and a fun little 3' bonnethead shark. Great trip with a fun family
