Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing was average to fair this week, as conditions were a bit challenging. We were coming off a full moon and had some wind and cool weather. Typical winter fishing in Sarasota, Florida. Still, I got in three charters and clients caught speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, jacks, flounder, gag grouper, sharks, mangrove snapper, pompano, ladyfish, and more. Big Pass and the deep flats at Marker # 5, Radio Tower, and the Middlegrounds were the best spots. Bass Assassin jigs in glow/chartreuse and live shrimp produced equally well. Rapala X-Raps and Jointed BX Minnow plugs in gold and firetiger fooled snook in the Myakka River.
Early in the week, Peg Heaslip and her son Ben from Canada fished with me. The bite was a bit tough; after catching a few ladyfish we moved to docks and caught gag grouper to 18" on live shrimp. The wind picked up, making anchoring quite difficult. We finished up in Phillippi Creek, catching a few snapper.
David Fox from New York City fished with me on Tuesday. It was a beautiful day, too nice in fact. Hardly a breath of wind resulted in poor conditions to drift the flats. It seemed like I had either too much wind or not enough! Action was steady on quite a variety of species, with pompano, bonnet head and blacktip sharks, Spanish mackerel, jack crevelle, speckled trout, flounder, ladyfish, and other species being landed in Big Pass and the surrounding flats. Jigs produced some fish, but the "silent partner (A rod in the holder baited with a live shrimp) caught the most fish!
On Friday Lance and Caroline DeVries from Chicago, IL fished the Myakka River. We went at 9:00 to allow it to warm up; it was quite chilly in the morning. They landed several snook to 22" on Rapale X-Raps and Jointed BX Minnow lures.
