Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

Once again, we experienced a week of challenging weather conditions. Winter fronts moved through, bringing wind and rain and stirring up the water in Sarasota Bay, especially near the passes. Fishing the deep grass flats produced decent action, mostly all of the fishing being ladyfish. Sheepshead are starting to show up in decent numbers and some good sized fish as well. Docks in Big Pass produced sheepshead to 3 pounds using live shrimp, along with some nice black sea bass. One option this time of year to escape the wind is to fish for snook in the Myakka River. It is very protected there and is fish-able on even the worst days. Action has been good on both snook and largemouth bass. Rapala X-Raps and BX Minnow plugs produced snook to 28" and bass to 2 pounds.
I fished the Myakka river a couple of times early in the week, with good results. On Monday several snook to 27" and a couple of chunky two pound bass hit Rapala X-Raps and Rattlin raps. On Wednesday we landed a pair of snook, one 28" and the other 25". The gold #10 Rapala X-Rap Slashbait was the hot lure this week.
Scott Bralow from Philadelphia, PA, his wife Vicki, and her mom had a typical "winter" charter on Saturday. The weather was beautiful and the deep grass at the middlegrounds, Radio Tower, and Marina Jack produced steady action on ladyfish. We moved to some nearby docks, where Vickie had the hot hand, catching several sheepshead to 3 pounds and a big sea bass
