Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report

The weather has once again been challenging this week. A severe front moved through mid-week, bringing high winds and near-freezing temperatures. Action on the deep flats was decent prior to the front. Bass assassin jigs and live shrimp produced Spanish mackerel, trout, bluefish, and ladyfish. Structure throughout the area is holding sheepshead, black drum, and redfish, and snapper for anglers bottom and dock fishing with shrimp.
On Sunday Tim Wilhelm from MI treated his family to a charter on Sunday. The wind was blowing 20 knots out of the northwest, so we found protected areas in Robert's Bay and caught mostly sheepshead using shrimp.
On Monday Jim Mitchell and his brother John, both from Minnesota, experienced steady action casting jigs and free lining live shrimp at the Radio Tower and Middlegrounds. Most of the fish caught were ladyfish with a decent Spanish mackerel and a couple small trout mixed in.
Bill Mareen and his son-in-law Troy had a good trip just before the front moved through. Sheepshead and mangrove snapper provided non-stop action near Bird Key, then a move to the Radio Tower finished up the charter with steady action on ladyfish using jigs. The weather deteriorated and I did not get back out until Saturday.
Tim Smalley from MN took a couple of buddies, Dan Martin and Kim Elverum went out on Saturday. We went in the afternoon to let it warm up a bit. With the water cold and dirty after the front, we decided to fish live shrimp under docks and near structure in and around Big Pass. They caught around 30 fish, including black drum to 7 pounds, sheepshead, mangrove snapper, and a 20" redfish. A good trip, considering the conditions.
