Sarasota - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing was fair once again this week, particularly later in the week as we had high pressure, blue-bird skies, weak tides, and coming off the full moon. Fly anglers did better early in the week casting Closer Minnows and catching trout, pompano, Spanish mackerel, silver trout, jacks, ladyfish, and more. Gulp! shrimp, jigs, plugs, and live shrimp fooled speckled trout, pompano, jack crevelle, sea bass, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and ladyfish. Marina Jacks, Big Pass, Stephen's Pt., and the Middlegrounds were the best spots this week.
On Monday and Tuesday Aaron Crouse from Utah fished with me. On Monday he brought along his dad, Jim, who lives here in town. Aaron is an avid fly angler and his dad cast Gulp! Shrimp. Action was steady at Stephen's Pt, Marina Jacks and Marker #5. On Tuesday Aaron's wife Emmaly came along. She is a good caster in her own right and the two tossed flies all morning. Action was decent, with the couple landing ten different species including silver trout, speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, pompano, ladyfish, and jacks. A Clouser with a white belly and rootbeer Crystal Flash was the hot fly both days.
Bill Mileski from Ohio brought his daughter Lexi and her friend Kenny on Wednesday. The bite was a bit slow, with Kenny doing the most damage using a white Gulp! Shrimp with a chartreuse tail. Trout to 16", ladyfish, jacks, and sea bass were caught near Bird Key.
On Thursday local resident Doc Dojutrek went out on his annual birthday charter. Again, the bite was a bit slow. We started off casting topwater plugs near Selby looking for snook, but only caught a pair of jacks. Marina Jack and Marker #5 produced very little. A move to Big Pass resulted in a pair on pompano and a couple of ladyfish using red and white Silly Willy jigs. The next hour was pretty slow, then I ran up to Stephen's Pt. It was a little better, as we caught several trout and a Spanish mackerel. We finished up with decent action at the Middlegrounds and Radio Tower, catching trout, jacks, and ladyfish on jigs and shrimp.
I finished up my week with Laura Abel and Paul Amos, a couple from Baltimore, MD. Once again, the bite was a little slow, but they managed to catch ladyfish, trout, and a bluefish in Big Pass and the Middlegrounds. New Penny Bass Assassin jigs produced the best, we could not give a live shrimp away.
